Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

• On 28 June 2024, the Jharkhand cabinet approved 200 Units of free electricity for the people of Jharkhand.
• The objective of the scheme is to alleviate the financial burden on the middle class people of Jharkhand.
• The free electricity scheme was implemented by CM Hemant Soren in August 2022.
• Initially, the benefits of free electricity were limited to 100 units per month.
• Later, in Feb 2024 the number of free electricity units was increased by the government up to 125 units from 100 units.
• The cabinet meeting held on June 28, 2024, Jharkhand former CM Champai Soren gave his nod to raise the number of free electricity units to 200 from 125.
• Therefore, after receiving approval, domestic consumers will not have to pay any electricity charge if their consumption is up to 200 units.
• To provide the monthly free electricity benefits up to 200 units to domestic electricity consumers, the state government has launched the "Mukhyamantri Urja Khushhali Yojana".
• From July 2024, the Jharkhand 200 Unit Free Electricity Scheme will be known as Mukhyamantri Urja Khushhali Yojana.
• The government also promise to waive off the bill generated untill July 2024 under the scheme.
• Government will also provide a subsidy of Rs 2.05 per unit to consumers whose monthly consumption is between 201 to 400 units.
• However, if their monthly consumption exceeds 400 units, no subsidy will be provided.
• The Energy Department will disburse Zero Amount Electricity Bill to every consumer whose monthly consumption is below 200 Units.
• The 200 unit free electricity scheme is also known as 'Jharkhand 200 Unit Muft Bijli Yojana' or 'Jharkhand Free Electricity Scheme'.
• It is estimated that around 41 lakhs consumers are going to receive benefits of the scheme.
• To implement the scheme, the government will bear an additional burden of Rs 21.7 crore per month.
• Eligible consumer start receiving the benefits of Jharkhand Muft Electricity Yojana from July 2024.
• Consumers are not required to apply for the scheme, as the benefits will be provided automatically as per their monthly consumption.
• In case of any query or complaint regarding the Jharkhand Free Electricity Scheme, the consumer can contact the electricity department of their concerned area.

Scheme Benefits

• Under the Jharkhand Free Electricity Scheme, the government offers :-
  • Free Electricity to all domestic consumers.
  • Free Electricity will be provided on monthly consumption of 200 units.
  • Post consumption of 200 units consumers will receive a subsidy of Rs 2.05 per unit.

Eligibility Requirements

• Beneficiary should be a Resident of Jharkhand.
• Beneficiary should have Domestic Electricity Connection.
• The Monthly Electricity Consumption of Beneficiary should not be more than 200 Units.
• Beneficiary residing in Both Urban and Rural Area are Eligible for Free Electricity.

Required Documents

• The below mentioned documents is required to avail the benefit of free electricity under Jharkhand 200 Unit Free Electricity Scheme :-
  • Domestic Electricity Bill.

Steps to Apply

• Jharkhand Free Electricity scheme benefits will be provided to all domestic consumers of the state.
• To receive benefits, the consumers are not required to submit applications for the Jharkhand Free Electricity Scheme.
• The electricity department will generate zero bills to all domestic users whose monthly consumption is below 200 units.
• But in case the consumption of a units is more than 200 then consumers need to pay the charges as per the tariff.
