Introduction

• In recent times, the Tamil Nadu government has launched various schemes for the students hail from lower and middle class backgrounds.
• Announced scheme aims to provide financial assistance, sports kit and fellowships so that they can excel in their life.
• Among these schemes, the "Tamil Nadu Pudhumai Penn Scheme" has brought a huge success for the state government.
• In the aforementioned scheme, the government provides monthly financial assistance to female students who have completed their education from government affiliated schools.
• After being successful for girls, the government has decided to extend its benefits to state boys as well.
• In its 2024-25 budget, the government announced to launch "Tamil Nadu Tamizh Pudhalvan Scheme".
• Announced scheme is also known by other names such as "Tamil Pudhalvan Thittam".
• The main objective to launch this scheme is to reduce the dropout rate among boys students.
• Over the years, it has been observed that after completing intermediate either students don't opt for the higher studies or drop out after getting admission.
• The one and the foremost reason for this is financial constraints, as their parents are unable to afford expenses incurred during the course.
• Thus to improve the boys' enrollment in higher studies, the government announced the TN Tamizh Pudhalvan Scheme.
• Under the Tamizh Pudhalvan Scheme, the eligible beneficiaries will receive a monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000/-.
• Such assistance can be used by the students for their education expenses, which includes the purchase of books, textbook, stationery, and magazines.
• However, the benefit of the scheme is restricted to boys who have completed their studies from government schools.
• In contrast, boys who have studies from 6 to 12 standard from any government recognized school are eligible for the scheme.
• Moreover, it is expected that the benefits will also be provided to students registered under RTE act in any private schools.
• Implementation of this initiative will be helpful for marginalized and economically disadvantage students, who are the future pillars of their families, state and country.
• According to the government, around 3 lakhs students are going to receive benefits from Tamizh Pudhalvan Scheme.
• For its implementation across the state, the government has appointed Social welfare and Women Empowerment Department its nodal department.
• The government has earmarked a budget of Rs 360 Cr for 2024-25 financial year.
• Application forms for Tamil Nadu Tamizh Pudhalvan Scheme are likely to be received online, whose details are not known yet.
• As the government has decided to launch the Tamil Pudhalvan Scheme in August 2024, so its guidelines are expected to be released soon.

Benefits of Scheme

• Under the Tamizh Pudhalvan Scheme, state government aims to provide following benefits to the eligible beneficiaries :-
  • Monthly Assistance of Rs 1,000/- will be provided to boys students.
  • Scheme will help to reduce the dropout rate among boys in higher education.
  • Assistance can be used to buy stationery or other necessary items.
  • It will help to reduce the extra financial burden levy on the parents.

Eligibility Criteria

How to apply

• To receive the financial assistance under the Tamil Nadu Tamizh Pudhalvan Scheme, beneficiaries must submit their applications.
