Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

• Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had earlier launched the Chief Minister Scholarship Scheme, under which students from Class 11 up to Ph.D. level receive an annual scholarship of Rs. 6,000.
• On 2nd September 2025, the State's Tourism Minister Shri Paul Lyngdoh announced another welfare initiative for the students pursuing their education in the hospitality sector.
• Chief Minister Hospitality Scholarship Program is the name of the scheme which is launched by the Meghalaya Government.
• The aim of this scholarship scheme is to encourage students to take up higher studies in the hospitality sector after passing Class 12th so that they can contribute to the growth of Meghalaya's tourism and hospitality industry.
• Department of Tourism of the Government of Meghalaya is the nodal department of this scheme.
• This scholarship program is only for those beneficiary students who are currently enrolled in IHM Shillong in the B.Sc. Hospitality and Hotel Administration course.
• The Meghalaya Government will cover all academic and educational expenses of the beneficiary students, including :-
  • Tuition fees
  • Hostel fees
  • Mess charges
  • Uniform costs
• Eligible and selected students will not have to bear any cost of education while pursuing the B.Sc. programme in Hospitality and Hotel Administration.
• Students whose annual family income is more than Rs. 3 lakh per year are not eligible to apply.
• There is no age limit in this scheme, but applicants must have passed Class 12 with English as a subject.
• Initially, the Chief Minister's Hospitality Scholarship Program will run for three academic years (three batches).
• Each year, 55 students will be selected, making a total of 165 beneficiaries during this period.
• The government has allocated Rs. 6.06 Crore for the implementation of the scheme.
• At present, the detailed application process has not been announced.
• Based on the Minister's statement, the Block Development Officer (BDO) will first nominate candidates, and the State Level Selection Committee will make the final selection.

Scheme Benefits

• The entire course fee will be paid by the Government of Meghalaya under this scholarship.
• The coverage of course fees includes the following components :-
  • Tuition Fees.
  • Hostel Accommodation Charges.
  • Mess/ Meal Expenses.
  • Uniform Expenses.

Eligibility Requirement

• The student should be a Permanent Resident of Meghalaya.
• The applicant must have passed Class 12th with English as one of the subjects.
• The student should be currently enrolled in the B.Sc. Hospitality and Hotel Administration program at IHM Shillong.
• The annual family income of the applicant should be less than Rs. 3 lakh per year.
• There is no minimum or maximum age limit set by the government for this scholarship.

Steps to Apply

• The Tourism Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Paul Lyngdoh, recently announced the launch of the Chief Minister Hospitality Scholarship Program in the state.
• He did not share detailed guidelines regarding the application process of the scheme.
• However, he emphasized that the selection of beneficiaries would be based on merit and interest, with the initial nominations made at the Block level by the Block Development Officer (BDO).
• The final list of eligible students for the scholarship will be prepared by the State Level Selection Committee which will take the final decision on awarding the scholarship to selected students.
• It can be assumed that the application forms for the Chief Minister Hospitality Scholarship Program may likely be available at the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO).
• Students may have to submit their applications there for verification.
• The Block Development Officer will first verify the received applications and then forward the names of eligible candidates for further selection.
• Further, the State Level Selection Committee will give its approval and the selected students will receive the scholarship benefits under the Meghalaya Government's Chief Minister Hospitality Scholarship Program.
