Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

• The Government of Uttar Pradesh has introduced the Atal Chevening Scholarship Scheme in the state.
• The complete title of this initiative is "Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Chevening Uttar Pradesh State Government Scholarship Scheme".
• It is also popularly referred to as "Chevening Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sarkar Scholarship Yojana".
• The primary aim of this scheme is to create global learning opportunities for talented and deserving students of Uttar Pradesh.
• Taking inspiration from the vision of former Prime Minister Late Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and in partnership with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) along with the Chevening Program of the UK Government, the Uttar Pradesh Government signed an agreement on 19th August 2025 to nurture future leaders.
• Through the Atal Chevening Scholarship Scheme, bright students of Uttar Pradesh will be able to pursue a one-year Master's degree program at prestigious universities in the United Kingdom.
• Selected candidates can study at world-renowned institutions such as the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
• Every year, five meritorious students will be chosen under this scheme to pursue their higher studies in the top universities of the UK.
• The Master's degree program offered under the Atal Chevening UP Scholarship Scheme is fully funded, with 50% of the cost covered by the Uttar Pradesh Government and the remaining 50% funded by the UK Government.
• The overall cost of a one-year Master's degree program is estimated at Rs. 45 to 50 lakh, out of which around Rs. 23 lakh will be contributed by the Uttar Pradesh Government, while the rest will be borne by the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
• The Atal Chevening Scholarship covers the following things :-
  • Full coverage of University tuition fees.
  • A monthly stipend will be provided to the student.
  • Travel expenses to and from the United Kingdom will be taken care of.
  • An arrival allowance will be granted at the time of joining.
  • A homeward departure allowance will be provided at the end of the course.
  • The cost of VISA application will be reimbursed.
  • A travel grant will be given for attending official events.
• Eligibility requires that applicants must have completed their graduation at least two years before the application date, along with a minimum of two years or 2800 hours of professional work experience to apply for a Master's program under the Chevening Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sarkar Scholarship Yojana.
• Initially, this scholarship will run for three years, after which it may be extended depending on its performance and outcomes.
• For the academic year 2025-26, the Uttar Pradesh Government has already set aside a budget of Rs. 2 crore to fund this initiative.
• Applications for the 2026–27 session of the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Chevening Uttar Pradesh State Government Scholarship Scheme are currently open, with the last date being 7th October 2025.
• Interested students can apply online through the official website and avail the opportunity to pursue a fully funded one-year Master's degree from top UK universities.

Eligibility Requirement

• Applicant Student should be a Permanent Resident of Uttar Pradesh.
• The applicant must be a meritorious student and should have successfully completed graduation.
• A minimum of 2 years of work experience or 2800 working hours after graduation is required.
• The scholarship program will remain active for a period of three academic years, 2025-26, 2026-27, and 2027-28.
• Good command over the English language will be considered an added advantage.

Steps to Apply

• Students from Uttar Pradesh who wish to pursue their Master's degree at universities in the United Kingdom can submit their application online for the Atal Chevening Scholarship Scheme.
• The online application form for the Atal Chevening Scholarship Scheme is accessible on the Official Chevening Website.
• Visit the website and click on Apply.
• The applicant must select India as the country and choose Scholarship under award type, then click on Search.
• Choose Atal Chevening Scholarship Scheme.
• A new page will open where the candidate needs to click on Apply Today.
• A list of available Chevening Scholarships in India will be displayed. From this list, the student should pick the Chevening Scholarship 2026–2027 and then press Submit.
• After this, the registration form for the Atal Chevening Scholarship Scheme will appear, where students must provide the following information :-

• The Chevening Website will then verify eligibility by asking a few questions.
