Introduction
- Whether its rural or urban, open defecation is quite common in India, instead of toilets people used to defecate in open fields.
- Due to this, our drinking water sources and food contaminated, which causes major diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, trachoma, malaria, ascariasis, intestinal worms etc.
- Not only this, the conventional sanitation and absence of toilets also cost India 6.4% of its GDP in 2006.
- It also affects the health of children's especially under age group of 5 because of their weak immunity.
- In addressing this issue across India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the world's largest sanitation mission, known as the 'Swachh Bharat Mission,' in 2014.
- Under this mission, the government aim to construct 10 crore individual toilets and they believe by October 2019 to make India an Open Defecation Free Country.
- They also ensure, no households should engage in the open defecation and avoid construction of new insanitary toilets during the mission.
- Along with, the already constructed pit latrines are converted to sanitary latrines.
- If there is a sewage system available, only a toilet structure will be constructed, whereas in its absence, an on-site treatment system shall be constructed.
- Under the scheme, the government will construct Households toilets, community toilets, public toilets and urinals.
- For its construction, the government will provide incentive as decided for rural and urban areas.
- Beneficiary Household Groups will be identified by the procedure designed by ULB.
- Similarly for the rural areas, the incentive for each individual household latrine (IHHL) construction is Rs 12000.
- As of Jan 30, 2024, over 5,09,680 villages declared themselves ODF.

- As the scheme is associated to Cleanliness, so it may produce multiple benefits to the urban and rural people.

Eligibility Criteria
- Individual or households of rural and urban area are eligible for the scheme.
- However, primarily the target group are those who are from low income households.
- You are must be on specific geographical areas which are in identified as sanitation needs.

- You can submit the Swachh Bharat Mission IHL Application online from its official website.
- To apply, the applicants need to first register on the portal, where they need to submit some of their details, which are;
- Name
- Mobile Number
- Address
- PAN Card/Passport/Voter ID Card Number
- Post registration, the applicants need to login with the details generated during registration.
- After submitting the application, the officials will verify your documents.
- Post verification, you need to wait for the approval letter.
