Introduction
- Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a government launched scheme that is brought under National Food Security Act, 2013.
- It is a maternity Benefit program that is implemented in all districts of the country.
- PMMVY is a conditional cash transfer scheme for pregnant and lactating women of 19 years of age or above.
- As the majority of women in India are adversely affected by under-nutrition, every third woman is undernourished and every second woman is anaemic.
- It is inevitable for an undernourished mother to give birth to a low birth weight baby.
- When poor nutrition starts in-utero, it extends throughout the life cycle since the changes are largely irreversible.
- Due to economic and social distress may women continue to work to earn a living for their family right up to the last days of their pregnancy.
- Therefore, this scheme is launched to provide partial compensation for the wage loss in terms of cash incentives so that the woman can take adequate rest before and after delivery of the first living child.
- As, it would lead to improved health seeking behaviour amongst the pregnant women and lactating mothers(PW & LM).
- After successful implementation of the scheme, the government announced the PMMVY 2.0. under which the beneficiary may avail the benefit of the scheme for their second girl child, the benefit of Rs 6000 is to be paid in one instalment post birth.
- Under the PMMVY 2.0 the amount paid in three instalment for the first living child, will now be paid in two instalment Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively.
- A beneficiary may register for the PMMVY scheme till 270 days of the child birth.
Benefits of Scheme
- Beneficiary will receive a financial assistance of Rs 5000 and Rs 6000 for 1st and 2nd girl child respectively.
- All pregnant and lactating mothers are eligible for the scheme, subject to fulfilling the conditions given.
- In case of miscarriage or still birth the mother will be considered as fresh beneficiary in future pregnancy.
