Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview

  • The Karnataka Government, known for its beneficial schemes, has come up with a Health Care Scheme called as "Gruha Arogya Yojana".
  • Scheme offers door to door health screening of 6 major Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
  • Under this screening, preliminary check up of some common cancers such as Oral, Breast and Cervical will also be conducted.
  • According to the statistics, Non Communicable Disease (NCDs) contributed 68% of deaths globally and 60% of deaths in India.
  • In recent times, its prevalence keeps on increasing year on year, with Karnataka being one of the most affected states.
  • To inhibit this rising percentage and to prevent premature deaths prominent in the young generation due to these Non Communicable diseases, the state government launched the "Gruha Arogya Yojana".
  • With the launch of Gruha Arogya Yojana, the state government aims to reduce the complications and premature mortality rate caused by these Non Communicable Diseases.
  • The scheme aims to provide early detection of these NCDs in underprivileged beneficiaries, who are not aware of it.
  • Scheme will also be known by other names such as "Karnataka Gruha Arogya Scheme".
  • Government looking to launch this scheme in a phased manner, covering eighth districts in the first phase and will expand statewide by January.
  • The 8 district across four divisions that are going to receive door to door health screening benefits of Gruha Arogya Yojana in the first phase are : -
    • Ramanagara and Tumakuru in Bengaluru Division.
    • Belagavi and Gadag in the Belagavi Division.
    • Ballari and Yadgir in the Kalaburagi Division.
    • Dakshina Kannada and Mysruru in the Myusuru Division.
  • People aged 30 years and above are eligible to receive Gruha Arogya Yojana benefits.
  • Medical screening facilities under the scheme specifically for poor and vulnerable sections of societies.
  • The primary objective of the scheme is not only to detect the diseases but also to provide proper medication facility from these life threatening diseases.
  • A team of 4 members, including CHO (Community Health Officer), ASHA Worker, Health Inspecting Officer, and Primary Health Officer will conduct the door to door screening.
  • During their visits, they will not only perform screening but also raise awareness about popular NCDs; such as hypertension, diabetes, cervical, mouth and breast cancer.
  • These door to door health screening will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, covering 20 homes each day.
  • During health screening, if anyone is diagnosed with cancer, he/she will be referred to the nearest community health centre or taluka hospital for further confirmation and treatment.
  • On the other hand, people showing signs of hypertension or diabetes will receive teleconsultation from the doctors.
  • If doctors confirm the same, free medication will be provided to them for the next three months.
  • Scheme will also offer counselling to individuals about the risk factors of sleep apnea, BMI imbalances, Smoking, and addiction of Alcohol.
  • All cases of Non Communicable Disease will be updated by the CHOs on their portal along with patient ABHA IDs.
  • In the second stage of Gruha Arogya Yojana, the government will organize monthly health camps at Ayushman Arogya Mandir, focusing on follow up and management of Non communicable Disease.
  • Department of Health and Family Welfare Services, Karnataka, will be the nodal authority of the scheme to oversee its proper implementation.
  • Funded by National Health Mission (NHM), the state government earmarked a budget for Gruha Arogya Yojana is Rs. 92.75 Cr.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Although the Gruha Arogya Yojana is for the citizens for Karnataka, but specific criteria must be fulfilled to receive its benefits : -
    • Beneficiaries must be domiciled resident of Karnataka.
    • Beneficiary aged 30 and above are eligible.
    • Both men and women will receive medical screening benefits.
    • Applicants must belong to the poor and vulnerable section of society.
