Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview
- The Government of India launched the Cashless Treatment for Road Accident Victims scheme as a pilot project on 14 March 2024 in Chandigarh and Assam.
- From 5 May 2025, the scheme has been extended nationwide, offering benefits to accident victims across the country.
- The objective of this scheme is to provide immediate and quality medical treatment to road accident victims during the critical golden hour after the incident.
- This scheme is being implemented by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in collaboration with State Health Agencies, Police departments, and empanelled hospitals.
- Victims of road accidents can avail free medical care at empanelled hospitals without paying any upfront costs.
- Under this initiative, victims are eligible for cashless treatment up to Rs. 1,50,000/- provided by the government.
- The financial coverage includes medical expenses incurred during the first seven days following the accident.
- It applies to any kind of road accident involving any type of motor vehicle, regardless of the road category.
- Only hospitals empanelled under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) are authorized to offer this cashless facility.
- It is mandatory to report the road accident to the nearest police station within 24 hours to access the scheme benefits.
- Hospitals cannot charge the patient or their family members for treatment under this scheme.
- After providing medical care, hospitals will submit reimbursement claims to the Central Government for the free treatment provided to the accident victims.
- Enroll under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and get an accident security cover of Rs. 2 lakh at just Rs. 20/- premium.
Scheme Benefits

- Treatment will be provided through Ayushman Bharat PM Jan Arogya Yojana Impanelled Hospitals.
Eligibility Requirements
- A victim of a Road Accident who sustains injuries.
- Indian Citizens as well as other Nationals are Eligible.
- Hospitalisation of Road Accident Victims should be take place within 24 hours of the Accident.
- It is mandatory to inform the police.
Required Documents
- Victim Aadhaar Card or any Identity Proof.
Steps to Apply
- No direct way is available to avail the benefit of the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme.
- Central Government makes the process simple so that anyone can avail free and cashless treatment in case of an emergency arising due to a road accident.
- It is mandatory to hospitalise the road accident victim in any Ayushman Bharat Yojana empanelled Hospital within 24 hours of the accident and inform the police.
- Hospital authorities will register the road accident victim by on the Transaction Management System and on the Electronic Detailed Accident Report Portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
- Details of the victim will be auto-fetched by the portal to complete the admission process.
- Cashless Treatment will then be provided to the accident victim up to Rs. 1,50,000/- for 7 days.
- Once the limit is exhausted, the victim will be discharged from the hospital.
- Hospitals will then claim the amount of treatment of the accident victim from the National Health Agency.
