Scheme Introduction: A Brief Overview
- The NTR Baby Kit Scheme was originally launched by the Andhra Pradesh Government in 2016 under the leadership of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
- In 2019, the scheme was discontinued by the incoming YSR-led government.
- After winning the 2024 elections, the TDP government has announced its intention to revive the scheme across the state.
- The core aim of this scheme is to promote institutional deliveries and improve the health and nutrition of both mothers and their newborns.
- The scheme's nodal department is Department of Health, Medical & Family Welfare, Government of Andhra Pradesh.
- Under the scheme, mothers who give birth in government health institutions will receive a baby care kit with 11 essential daily-use items.
- Items in the kit include a baby bed with mosquito net, baby clothes, towels, nappies, powder, oil, shampoo, soap, a toy, and more.
- The kit will only be given to mothers who deliver their child at Government Hospitals, Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Urban PHCs (UPHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs) or any other recognized public health institutions.
- Home births or deliveries at private hospitals will not be eligible for the kit under the scheme.
- Distribution of the baby kits will take place either through Anganwadi Centres or directly via the government hospitals where delivery occurs.
- Registration for the scheme will be facilitated by the Anganwadi Workers after the baby is delivered.
- The government has initiated the tender process for procuring the baby kits and plans to roll out the scheme soon.
- Eligible mothers are advised to stay updated, as the kits will be distributed shortly after relaunch.
- Additionally, expectant mothers can register for the "Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana" after their first antenatal checkup to receive financial support for childbirth.
